Codrach
Codrach: Scots - variously, 'an idle person of a low class', dirty and unskilful, clumsy, rough.
Codrach is the name of the free-form improvising jam band of musicians and poets (and those who fall anywhere in between) formed by RS in 2024. This followed a conversation with fellow poet Stewart Sanderson in Glasgow, where both expressed a desire to engage with music in a less restrained way than they were separately used to (Sanderson on guitar, Sharp on clarsach). Also noting the number of poets they knew who also played instruments, some more formally than others.
RS put out a call-to-arms in the form of Codrach, for a performance in Glasgow to mark the launch of her collection Long Field Loop - for any (local) interested poets and musicians to come along and join in with a live, unplanned group instrumental improvisation. The first assembly of Codrach was on 19th June 2024 at The Old Hairdresser's in Glasgow, comprising RS (clarsach), Stewart Sanderson (guitar), Alex South (clarinets), Emma Jane Lloyd (violin, viola) and Emil Thompson (cura saz).
Forthcoming events (assemblies) are listed below, and in the Diary page.
Codrach isn't a band, it's an idea - the line-up and nature of the thing is different every time, that's the point. If you're a poet who moonlights as a musician, or a musician with an interest in improvisation or poetry cross-overs, you're welcome! Contact RS anytime if you spot an opportunity for a gig, and we'll put our heads together.
If you're an event organiser looking to programme Codrach for a poetry or music event, please email info@rebeccajoysharp.com - RS will help coordinate a line-up where possible.
